Decatur Park District releases traffic information for Nelson Park Independence Day celebrations

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - The Decatur Park District has released important traffic information for residents who will be celebrating Independence Day at Nelson Park.

Officials say no parking will be allowed on Lost Bridge Road, Lake Shore Drive, or Route 36 during this celebration.  Motorists are also advised that Lake Shore Drive in Nelson Park will be closed beginning at the Snack Shack.

Traffic will temporarily be re-routed during the Staley Firecracker Road Run from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.  Officials say a 20-minute fireworks display will be shown over Lake Decatur at approximately 9:00 p.m., and that attendees should use the following directions to exit the park after the display:

- All traffic from west of the Boat House lot to Chandler Park will exit to the west onto Lost Bridge Road at the Chandler Park entrance.

- All traffic from the Boat House lot, the old Paul’s Puttin’ Place lot, and Nelson Park Dog Park lot will exit to Lake Shore Drive and turn west toward 22nd Street.

- Traffic along Nelson Boulevard will be directed north to Route 36.

Officials also say that motorists are encouraged to be patient, and to expect short delays.
