Illinois sees record-setting rainfall in June

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN - Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel has announced that last month is officially the wettest June on record for the state, with 9.53 inches of rain.

Angel says that total beats out the previous record for June precipitation, which was set in 1902 with 8.27 inches.  Last month's rain totals also narrowly missed being the wettest month on record, as only September 1926 was wetter with 9.62 inches of rain.

Angel also says that several sites have reported more than the statewide total of precipitation, as 17.20 inches fell neat Ashkum in Iroquois County, and 16.17 inches fell in Chebanse in Kankakee County.

However, Illinois' average temperature for June was not record breaking, coming in at 71.9 degrees, just one-tenth of a degree above average.
