Governor Rauner acts on clemency petitions

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois officials say Governor Bruce Rauner acted on 158 clemency petitions on July 2, granting five and denying 153.

Officials say the petitions that Rauner acted on are part of a docket dating back to April 2006, and that this was the third set of petitions that Rauner has reviewed since being elected.  Officials also say each person that was granted clemency has recently undergone a criminal background check.

If Rauner grants a clemency petition, it allows the petitioner to seek expungement of their conviction through the court system.  Officials add that the Governor's Office has developed a process to regularly review clemency petitions.
