Police warn against job search scams

URBANA--Recent college graduates trying to find jobs are coming across scams instead.

University of Illinois Police received multiple reports from students encountering employers attempting to scam them out of hundreds of dollars.

They say job seekers should be wary of jobs for office or household assistance,

They should also look out for employers that communicate through generic email accounts like Yahoo, Gmail, or Live.com and ask their potential employees for money before the work even begins.

“What tipped these two students off that it was shady posting was that the employer asked them to send money to other people's accounts overseas,” said University of Illinois spokesman, Patrick Wade. “Fortunately they didn't, they figured out that it was deceptive practice and came to us. But we have had students scammed out of money in the past.”

UIPD asks anyone who believes they've encountered a fraud employer to file a report.
