Charleston man to be recognized for donating 25 gallons of blood

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON - American Red Cross officials say they will recognize a Charleston man during a July 12 blood drive for donating an extraordinary amount of blood throughout his lifetime.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette and Charleston Times-Courier is reporting that Don Schaefer will be recognized later this month for donating 30 gallons of blood at American Red Cross blood drives.  In comparison, officials say the average human body contains approximately 1.2 to 1.5 gallons of blood.

Schaefer is also urging other central Illinois residents to donate blood.  The blood drive will be held at Salisbury Church in Charleston, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
