Multiple People Injured in I-72 Crash on July 4

SANGAMON COUNTY – Illinois State Police report they responded to a single vehicle crash on I-72 West Bound Mile Post 114 where a driver and ten passengers were injured.

The crash took place on Saturday, July 4 at around 3:25 PM. Authorities say they discovered a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe had crashed near the Buffalo and Mechanicsburg exit on westbound I-72. The preliminary investigation reports the driver was traveling westbound on I-72 mile post 114 when they lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway to the right. This caused the vehicle to roll several times before finally coming to a rest off the right side of the road.

Police say a 34-year-old Champaign female was driving the Tahoe. Passengers include: a 27-year-old Champaign female, a 29-year-old Champaign female, a 10-year-old Champaign male, a 29-year-old Champaign female, an 11-year-old Champaign male, a 4-year-old Champaign male, a 13-year-old Champaign male, a 17-year-old Champaign female, a 5-year-old Champaign male and a 3-month-old Champaign female.

The driver and 8 of the passengers were transported to Springfield area hospitals by ambulance. Two passengers had to be transported to Springfield area hospitals by helicopter.
