Decatur-Based Unit Honored with Freedom Salute Ceremony
SPRINGFIELD – 10 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers are being recognized on Saturday, July 11 for their support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Detachment 36 will be honored by the National Guard Bureau Freedom Salute Campaign with a ceremony at Camp Lincoln located at 1301 North MacArthur Boulevard in Springfield at 11 AM. The unit conducted more than 200 missions in an operation that lasted approximately nine months.
Soldiers flew Beechcraft C-12 Huron aircraft to conduct operational airlift support missions in seven different countries in eastern Africa. They moved more than 900 personnel and over 75,000 pounds of cargo. The unit mobilized in July 2014 to deploy to Djibouti, Africa. Eight pilots and two flight operations noncommissioned officers made their way home individually throughout the month of April.
The Freedom Salute Campaign is one of the largest Army National Guard recognition endeavors in history. Detachment 36 will be publicly acknowledged at the ceremony, as well as those who supported them in their mission.
