SANGAMON COUNTY - Illinois State Police say one person was arrested after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in Sangamon County Tuesday night.

Authorities say the crash happened near mile post 99 at about 11:46 p.m.  According to the preliminary traffic investigation, police say a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling southbound on I-55 near mile post 99 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, entered the west ditch, and struck a pole.

Authorities say the driver of the Ford then made a U-Turn and began driving northbound in the southbound lanes, eventually striking a truck-tractor semi-trailer on the driver's side and puncturing the fuel tank.  This incident caused the temporary closure of southbound I-55 near the crash site for about one-and-a-half hours.

Illinois State Police say the driver of the Ford, identified as Cara Smith, 33, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.  Authorities continue to investigate this incident.  We will provide updates as they become available.
