DECATUR - The Decatur Police Department is raising awareness of a phone scam that's targeting elderly residents in central Illinois.

Decatur police say the scam involves a suspect calling elderly victims, and leaving a message on the victim's answering machine if the call is not answered, claiming to be an "Officer" of the IRS.  In the call, the suspect claims that an error has been made with rebate checks which were issued to and cashed by the victim, and that the victim must call back a number provided by the suspect in order to avoid fines, penalties, and arrest.

Police say the phone number used by the scammer has a 202 area code, and that if you receive this type of phone call to hang up immediately and not give out any personal information.  If you would like to report a scam, you are asked to call the Decatur Police Department at (217) 424-2721.
