DECATUR – The Millikin Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement will host the Long-Vanderburg Summer Leadership Academy from July 22 – 26.

This scholars program is an honors program that provides underrepresented students and those interested in social justice the opportunity to uphold and contribute to the legacy of academic excellence, leadership and service at Millikin University through curricular and co-curricular activities. Millikin Long-Vanderburg Scholars Program advisor Tonya Hines will direct the academy.

Scholars are able to establish connections with other first-year students from Arizona, Illinois, Indiana and Virginia. Millikin Assistant Profession of Education Dr. Ngozi Onuora will lead the students’ collaboration on a social justice project throughout the week. Visiting scholars will also be able to meet Decatur community leaders as well as Millikin faculty and staff.

Students will also participate in a Rock Springs Leadership Adventure and visit the Caterpillar Plant. Millikin Trustee Justice Lisa Holder White will speak with the scholars at the end of the week. Scholars will then have the opportunity to hold presentations of their work and experiences.

Caterpillar Inc. Foundation has supported and contributed to the program with donations and scholarships for the students. More information about the program can be obtained by contacting Tonya Hines at 217-424-6335 or by email at
