Inmates Dies of Medical Issue

DECATUR – The Macon County Sheriff’s Office reports an inmate died in custody on Saturday, July 18 at approximately 12:18 PM due to a medical issue.

Authorities say the inmate was being treated for a medical issue prior to going into medical distress. Correctional officers and medical staff performed resuscitation until the Decatur Fire Department and DAS arrived. Officials at St. Mary’s Hospital pronounced the inmate deceased upon arrival.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased,” said Sheriff Thomas Schneider.

Protocol states that all deaths occurring in custody must be investigated by the Illinois State Police. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the state police to investigate into the death.

This investigation is ongoing.
