DECATUR - In an update to a story WAND brought to you this past weekend, the Macon County Coroner has identified a Macon County Jail inmate who died in custody on July 18.

Coroner Michael Day says Michael Carter, 35, was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Room at 12:35 p.m.  Authorities say Carter was being treated for a medical issue prior to going into full arrest, and that correctional officers and medical staff performed CPR until responders arrived to take Carter to the hospital.

Day says the cause of death is still being classified as undetermined, pending toxicology screens, microscopic examination of specimens, and subsequent review of all post-mortem findings.  Day adds that there were no indications of any serious trauma, and no sign of overt violence.

This death is being investigated by the Illinois State Police.  We will provide more information as it becomes available.
