Vets & Disabled Back On The Greens

Decatur – Veterans and people with disabilities are hitting the little white ball on a local golf course.
“It started with my brother about a year and a half ago,” Dale Jones of Decatur told WAND’s Doug Wolfe.  “He had a stroke and we spent the better part of last summer teaching him how to play with one hand.”
The special outing takes place every Tuesday afternoon at 1pm at Scovill Golf Course in Decatur.  The park district provides special rates to those golfers.
“Get them up off the couch.  Get some fresh air and sunshine,” said Joe Hammel who assisted in putting the program together.  “And get a little exercise.”
Ernie Jones and Phil Young have both had strokes.  They have learned, with Dale’s help, to play golf with just one arm.    Young thought he would never be able to play again.  But he recently carded a 33 on the front 9 at Scovill.
The weekly cost is just $10 for 9 holes of play.  Contact Joe Hammel at 429-6243 or 620-2205.
