CHAMPAIGN - American Red Cross officials say volunteers responded to a residential fire on Champaign's north side early Thursday morning.

Officials say the fire took place in the 1600 block of Sheffield Road.  Red Cross volunteers, comprised of members of a local Disaster Action Team, responded to the home to provide food, clothing, emotional support, and a safe place to stay for residents affected by the fire.

Red Cross officials are advising central Illinois residents to get and maintain a smoke alarm, and to create and practice a fire escape plan.  For more tips and information, visit
