Mitsubishi to halt production at Normal, Illinois plant

Posted: Updated:

NORMAL - Mitsubishi Motors has announced plans to halt production at its Normal, Illinois plant and sell the facility.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Mitsubishi spokesperson Dan Irvin announced that the company reviewed its global supply chain and determined that it would be necessary to shut down the central Illinois plant and find a buyer.  Annual production numbers at the plant have fallen 68 percent since 2002, from 200,000 vehicles to 64,000.

Illinois Department of Commerce Director Jim Schultz released a statement Friday morning, saying that he is "saddened" with Mitsubishi's decision to close the central Illinois plant's doors.  Schultz also says his department will "be taking the necessary steps on the ground to help with job training and placement for the workers."

We will provide more details as they become available.
