Decatur Fire Department investigating residential fire

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - The Decatur Fire Department is investigating a residential fire that took place on the city's north side Friday morning.

Authorities say firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of North Water Street at about 4:24 a.m. for a report of a residential fire.  Upon arriving at the building, firefighters say they found the structure to be fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say the fire was fought defensively, with the intention of preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring structures.  Fire crews were not allowed to enter the building, and the building was declared a total loss.

According to a release from the Decatur Fire Department, the origin of the fire is undetermined at this time, and that cause is currently listed as "suspicious."  Officials say this fire is still under investigation.  We will provide more details as they become available.
