Christian County Sheriff warning residents of new phone scam

Posted: Updated:

CHRISTIAN COUNTY - The Christian County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of another IRS phone scam making its way through central Illinois.

According to Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp, several citizens have reported receiving an automated phone call from the IRS Legal Department, threatening a lawsuit if the citizen does not call back a phone number provided in the message.  Kettelkamp says these calls are scams, and that you shouldn't call the number back.

Authorities say citizens who receive one of these calls can call the IRS at (800) 829-1040 to see if they really owe money.  Citizens can also report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484.

Anyone with information about the source of these calls is asked to contact Christian County Crime Stoppers at (217) 824-9100, or the Christian County Sheriff's Office at (217) 824-4961.
