Commission to vote on proposed closure of Illinois State Museum, Hardin County Work Camp

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - Workers at a state natural history museum and Department of Corrections work camp could soon learn if their respective facilities will be closed due to the lack of a state budget.

According to a news release from the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, members will vote on Governor Bruce Rauner's proposal to close the Illinois State Museum and Hardin County Work Camp on August 5.  Officials say the closures have been proposed by Rauner in response to the lack of a balanced state budget for fiscal year 2016.

The Illinois State Museum was founded in 1877, and features numerous geology and biology collections.  The Hardin County Work Camp is a minimum security correctional facility in Southern Illinois.

The group will meet to take the vote at the Stratton Office Building in Springfield at 9:00 a.m.  We will provide updates as they become available.
