Champaign Police Investigate Neil Shooting Incident

CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign Police say they are seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects in a shooting that took place on Neil Street early Saturday morning.

Officers say they responded to a report of shots fired at 2:55 AM on Saturday, August 1. They arrived on scene in the 1400 block of North Neil Street to find one male subject injured. The 29-year-old male had been shot in his lower left leg. Another 26-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to his upper left leg but had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Both subjects had non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses told Champaign officers they had been hanging out in a backyard when they heard gun fire.

The subjects dispersed in multiple directions before realizing they had been wounded. The motive and identities of the shooters is unknown at this time.

One witness described the shooters as three black males in white t-shirts and baseball hats. Another claimed to have seen two black males with dark complexion, thin in build and wearing white t-shirts, dark pants and either black or blue baseball hats.

The suspects were last seen running eastbound from the location of the incident.
