Police Surround Rantoul Motel in Standoff with Possibly Armed Suspect

Posted:

RANTOUL--Our partners at the News-Gazette report a standoff in Rantoul is currently underway between police and a man believed to be armed.

Officers from Rantoul, the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, and the METRO team have surrounded the Days Inn, where a man who may have a gun is refusing to come out of a room he is in by himself.

Rantoul police say the man is a suspect in a robbery that occurred at a Hardee's in town Sunday night.

The stand-off has been going on since about 2:30 Tuesday morning, and roads around the motel have been blocked.

Motel patrons say they were evacuated from their rooms to the lobby by police around 3 AM. They were then taken to a gas station across the street around 7:30.

We'll provide updates as they become available.
