94 state workers to be laid off in September

Posted: Updated:

ILLINOIS - American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees officials say they have received notice from Governor Bruce Rauner's Office regarding layoffs for 94 state positions.

AFSCME officials say the layoffs will affect 54 jobs in the state Department of Natural Resources, 24 jobs at the Illinois Commerce Commission, nine positions at the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and seven jobs at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.  The layoffs will be effective on September 30, 2015.

Union officials say the notices stated the reason for the layoffs is due to a lack of funds.  According to Catherine Kelly, Press Secretary with Governor Rauner's Office, the layoffs are part of an effort to "responsibly manage the state's finances."

We will provide more details as they become available.
