Partial Collapse Damages 3 Buildings

Vandalia – A section of downtown Vandalia has been blocked off after the partial collapse of a nearly century old building.  The collapse of that structure also heavily damaged two other buildings.  It is likely all three will have to be torn down.

The main collapse happened in a building located at 507 W. Gallatin Street when the roof and third story caved in.  The walls of the building remain standing.  But on Tuesday afternoon the east wall of the structure was showing significant cracks.  The front of the building has wood boarding up some windows.  Boards also cover up doors in the front and side of the building.

A Fayette County judge entered an order prohibiting people from entering the building which has signs indicating it is unsafe.  The order came at the request of the city of Vandalia.  The damage is so extensive it is unlikely it could be repaired.

There were no injuries in the collapse.  There was also a building collapse in 2014 on the square in Taylorville.
