MAHOMET – Our partners at the News-Gazette report authorities have taken a Mahomet man into custody for the alleged murder of a woman whose remains were found in Champaign County two years ago.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office arrested 49-year-old Kevin Kelley as he was about to be paroled from the Vienna Correctional Center in southern Illinois.

Kelley is being investigated for the alleged first-degree murder of 23-year-old Kelsie Blackford, of Sidney. Blackford was found dead along County Road 2650 N by a fisherman on August 29, 2013. The News-Gazette article states she was missing for nine months before her remains were found.

Champaign County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Curt Apperson is cited in the article saying investigators quickly linked Blackford to Kelley as the two had dated. They had been seen together numerous times around Champaign County.

Investigators collected physical and circumstantial evidence that resulted in Kelley’s arrest warrant. A witness had also come forward claiming Kelley had admitted to the murder and disposing of the remains in the Sangamon River.

Kelley was extradited from the Illinois Department of Corrections on August 5 to the custody of the Champaign County Sheriff. He will be arraigned on these charges of first degree murder in connection with Blackford’s death for a bon set at one million dollars.

This investigation is ongoing. For further coverage, see the News-Gazette article here:
