Number of drivers admit to driving drunk

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON – More than 4-million Americans admitted to driving drunk at least once in 2012.

That sobering statistic is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Eighty percent of those who reported driving while impaired were men – and about a third of those males were between the ages of 21 and 34.

Most of those cases were reported in the Midwest.

Public health officials say effective strategies such as increasing the use of sobriety checkpoints, strictly enforcing minimum legal drinking age laws and increasing alcohol taxes could all play an important role in decreasing the number of alcohol-impaired drivers.
