SPRINGFIELD – Mayor Jim Langfelder and the Springfield Police Department are seeking applications for their next Citizen’s Police Academy in late August.

The police academy for citizens is a course of instruction that consists of ten weeks of orientation and instruction each Monday evening from 6 – 9 PM. It will meet beginning Monday, August 24 and end Monday, October 19. Community members can learn about a variety of subjects including but not limited to: officer selection, training process, investigation, crime prevention and community policing.

This experience is meant to enhance the community’s idea of policing concepts and increase public awareness. Students will be able to take part in demonstrations and tours of the police facilities.

Additionally, this course is free of charge. Each applicant must fill out an application and undergo a cursory background check prior to approval and admission.

Students are required to attend eight of ten sessions to graduate. Classes will be held at the Springfield Police Academy and the downtown police station.

Any questions should be directed to the Springfield Police Academy at 217-788-8415 or 217-788-8416.

Applications are available at the city’s website here or by calling Amanda Long at 217-788-8360.
