Authorities warning citizens of new phone scam

Posted: Updated:

CENTRAL ILLINOIS - The Macon County Sheriff's Office and Shelby County Sheriff's Office are advising the public about a potential scam making its way through central Illinois.

Authorities say citizens are reporting receiving a call from an individual who is identifying himself as a detective with the Macon County Sheriff's Office.  In some of the phone calls, deputies say the individual has identified himself as "Detective Lewis Flemming."

Officials say that there is no employee at the Macon County Sheriff's Office by that name, and that the calls could be a part of a scam.  Authorities say if you receive a phone call like this to write down the number that appears on your caller ID, hang up, and report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.
