DECATUR - HSHS St. Mary's Hospital is encouraging central Illinois residents to keep up with their immunizations during the month of August.

Officials say August is National Immunization Awareness Month.  According to HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Phil Barnell, it's "very important for people to make sure they are getting the vaccines" needed to help prevent certain diseases.

HSHS St. Mary's Hospital officials say they want central Illinois residents to stay informed about immunizations, and are offering reminders about the importance of vaccines.  Officials say vaccines can protect against serious, deadly diseases, are needed throughout our lives, and are safe.  Additionally, officials advise residents to ask their providers about vaccines and boosters needed throughout life.
