TAYLORVILLE – Neurofibromatosis Midwest (NF Midwest) will be hosting its 1st annual Great Steps 4NF walk at Taylorville’s Manners Park on Saturday, September 19.

The event will kick off at 9 AM with check-in and registration at the park with the 5K / walk starting at 10 AM. Participants can run or walk as an individual or form a “walking team” composed of friends, family, co-workers, students or teammates. Registration is $20 per adult and $12 per children ages 4 – 10. Children under four participate for free.

Walk-up registrations are allowed the day of the event, but the fee will be increased to $25 per person.

This event will also include snacks, face-painting, a jump house, raffles and live entertainment. Prizes will be awarded to those who raise the most money. An additional award is reserved for the team with the most creative accessory.

NF Midwest is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization comprised of families affected by NF supporting education on the disease and medical research about it.

Neurofibromatosis is a disease that can cause tumors to form and grow on nerves anywhere in the body at any time. This can lead to cancer, learning disabilities, bone deformities and many other adverse effects.

Executive Director Diana Haberkamp hopes to raise $200,000 this year to help the continuation of research for the disease.

“This level will also ensure that we are able to keep offering supportive camp and other activities for children afflicted with NF, as well as various support programs for adults with NF,” Haberkamp explains.

Additional information regarding the walk or NF Midwest’s Sponsorship Program, or to obtain a registration packet or Sponsorship Form, is available by contacting Neurofibromatosis by phone at 630-945-3562, by email at or by visiting the website at
