Grant money enables low income students to take AP tests for low cost

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO - Low income students could pay as little as $12.00 to take advanced placement exams, thanks to $28.4 million in grant money given to a number of states, including Illinois.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the grants this week. Illinois will receive nearly $2.6 million as a result.

Without the grant money, some tests cost nearly $100.00

The reduced costs are designed to encourage students to take placement tests and to obtain college credit for high school courses.

The Education Department offset costs for nearly 832,000 students during the 2014-2015 school year.
