Program aims to help local homeless shelters and alleviate panhandling

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD – Downtown Springfield, Inc. and the Helping Hands Homeless Shelter are launching a new program designed to alleviate panhandling in downtown Springfield and help local homeless shelters.

Instead of giving to panhandlers in the commercial district, you’ll be able to put cash and coins in clearly marked donation boxes located at cash registers at participating businesses.

The money will be deposited in a Downtown Springfield, Inc. designated account. The Parking, Traffic, and Safety Committee will determine, based on funding requests from shelter providers, how the money will be allocated.

Look for the “Lending a Hand” dispensaries in participating downtown merchants.
