Urbana Public Schools offer free meals

URBANA - All meals at Urbana Public Schools will be free this year.

Breakfast and lunch will come at no cost thanks to a federal program. 40 percent of the students in each school had to qualify for reduced or free meals for the district to get the money.

Last year, an estimated 71 percent of kids in Urbana fell into those categories.

"Our parents have been really ecstatic," said Carol Baker of the Urbana Public School District. " I mean, people with three or four kids are saving 500 dollars a child, so that's huge," she said.

The free breakfast and lunch apply to full meals, and not single food items.
