Champaign County Teachers Receive Art Grant

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – The Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation reports four art teachers from the area worked together to receive an art grant worth $2,700.

Susan Gleason (Urbana High School), Shannon Percoco (Centennial High School), Jill Lagerstam (Urbana High School) and Carol Lynn Comparetto (Central High School) are the first recipients of the It’s My I.D.E.A. Collaborative Grant.

The grant was designed by the CU Schools Foundation to share innovative ideas and enhance the educational opportunities for students across the community.

Gleason, who formed the team, says this will be a chance to collaborate not only between educators but students as well.

“It feels great to have this type of support and be able to find ways to supplement and enhance our students’ classroom experiences,” Gleason said.

Art students from all three public schools will be spending a day at the Krannert Art Museum as part of the grant. They will then create a piece in their school studios inspired by a piece at the museum.

Students will also be collaborating and planning a cross-district, student led art show at Lola’s Brush at Indi Go Gallery. A lot of the collaboration will take place using Google Classroom and Edmodo. Gleason hopes these experiences will give students exposure to a variety of art related careers besides strictly being an artist.
