Boy facing life-threatening injuries after Monday night crash

Posted: Updated:

ILLIOPOLIS - The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office says one child suffered life-threatening injuries after a crash in rural Illiopolis last night.

Sangamon County authorities say the crash happened at the intersection of Mechanicsburg/Illiopolis Road and Mt. Auburn Road at 8:27 p.m.  Upon arriving at the scene, deputies say they found that the crash had involved a lawn tractor pulling a trailer and a pickup truck.

According to the preliminary investigation, Sangamon County authorities say the lawn tractor, driven by a 10-year-old boy, and a 25-year-old man traveling in the trailer, were heading westbound on the road when the pickup, driven by a 20-year-old man, struck the trailer from behind.  Deputies say the 25-year-old man jumped from the trailer prior to the crash.

The two men were not injured in the crash, but the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department says the 10-year-old boy was transported to St. Louis Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.  This incident is still under investigation.  We will provide more information as it becomes available.
