Fugitive Captured in Christian County

JOHNSON TOWNSHIP – The Christian County Sheriff’s Office reports they arrested a Pana man who was being pursued by the Moweaqua Police Department.

Authorities were in pursuit of a Harley Davidson motorcycle that had entered Christian County from Moweaqua. The pursuit ended near 1350 East and 800 North Road in Johnson Township.

Officers say the suspect abandoned his motorcycle and fled on foot. After an extensive search of the area, 33-year-old Jared R. Bartimus was arrested without incident in a field near 800 North and 1250 East Road.

A passenger was identified as 36-year-old Rebecca Brooks, also of Pana. She was arrested on the scene and transported to the Christian County Jail.

Bartimus is currently being held in the Christian County Jail on an outstanding warrant for escape / failure to return from furlough and an Illinois Department of Corrections Warrant for violation of parole. Christian County authorities say further charges of felony aggravated fleeing and eluding will be sought in Christian County.

The Moweaqua Police Department anticipates charges will be sought in Shelby County as well.

Brooks is being held on a parole violation.

Law enforcement officers from the following agencies assisted in the successful apprehension of the pair: officers from Shelby, Macon, Montgomery and Christian County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the Illinois State Police Troopers and officers from Moweaqua.

K-9 Units from the following agencies assisted: Macon and Christian County Sheriff’s Offices, the Illinois State Police and Taylor Police Department.

The Illinois State Police Air Support also assisted in containing and tracking the suspect.

Authorities say they also owe thanks to citizens who offered assistance throughout the pursuit.
