Macon County Health Department warns businesses of potential scam

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - Macon County Health Department officials are advising local businesses to be aware of a potential phone scam.

Officials say they have received reports of an individual calling local food establishments and identifying as someone "with the health department."  The caller says they will be visiting these businesses to discuss past audits.  The Macon County Health Department is not yet sure of the intention of the caller or callers, and is asking any businesses who receive similar calls to contact the department's Division of Environmental Health at (217) 423-6988.

Additionally, Director of Environmental Health Kathy Wade is urging businesses to ask for an identification badge of any inspector, and to call the office to verify the inspection.  Wade also says to call local law enforcement if the inspection is found to be fraudulent.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
