Charleston police arrest 1 in weekend incident

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Police Department says one person was arrested following an incident that happened on the city's south side on August 22.

Charleston police say officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of First Street at about 1:45 a.m. for a report of a fight and shots fired.  Upon arriving, officers say they spoke with members of Eastern Illinois University's Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi fraternities about the incident.

Authorities say several fights took place while officers were on the scene, but most were dispersed without officers getting involved.  Police also say no evidence was found that would point to shots being fired at this location.

One person, identified as Aaron Haskins, was arrested at the scene for allegedly battering a police officer.  Haskins was then transported to the Coles County Sheriff's Department pending a bond hearing.

The Charleston Police Department continues to investigate this incident.  We will provide more details as they become available.
