Champaign Police Discuss Curbing Violence on Downtown Streets

CHAMPAIGN--Champaign police and local business owners are coming together to curb the violence on downtown streets.

At a meeting Thursday afternoon hosted by the Champaign Center Partnership, officers shared how they police the area, where they concentrate their time, and how they handle violent incidents.

This comes after many late night fights breaking out in parking lots surrounding downtown bars and clubs.

"If people are walking home or are going through the area late at night, we want to make sure that they are safe and that they are not involved in those kinds of things," said Erin Lippitz, executive director of the Champaign Center Partnership. "And we just want to make sure that it doesn't keep happening and that people feel comfortable when they come downtown."

Police say people can help them by reporting unlawful activity when it happens.
