Beckman dismissed from head football coach position

Posted: Updated:

URBANA - University of Illinois head football coach Tim Beckman has been dismissed by Director of Athletics Mike Thomas.

Thomas announced his decision to let Beckman go Friday afternoon.  Thomas says he made the decision based on preliminary results of an external review into allegations made against the U of I's football program.  Thomas adds that the "health and well-being of student-athletes" is the athletic department's top priority.

The review into the allegations is ongoing, and a final report is pending.  Bill Cubit will take over as interim head coach for the 2015 season, pending the Board of Trustees' approval during a meeting in September.  Officials also say Beckman will not receive payment for the remaining years on his contract.

We will provide more details as they become available.
