One Dead, Three Condition Unknown in I-57 Crash

I-57 NORTHBOUND – Illinois State Police report an Indiana woman is dead, and three other passengers were transported to Carle Hospital after a single vehicle fatal crash on northbound I-57 on August 28.

Authorities say their preliminary investigation reveals a silver 2002 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling on I-57 North near mile post 249, at around 12:15 PM, when it left the roadway for unknown reasons. The vehicle impacted the ditch and rolled over.

Four occupants were inside the vehicle: a 30-year-old male, a 31-year-old male, a 33-year-old female and a 29-year-old female.

State Police have identified the driver as Scott Fishel of Calumet City, Illinois.

The 29-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene at 1:30 PM. Reports say she was sitting on the rear seat passenger side. The Champaign County Coroner has identified the victim as Misty Lynn Vandenburgh of Lake Station, Indiana. Her autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Champaign County Coroner's office.

The three other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Carle Hospital. Their conditions are currently unknown. Officials are looking into alleged charges of DUI – Drugs and improper lane usage.

This investigation is ongoing by the Illinois State Police of District 10 and the Champaign County Coroner. We will provide more details as they become available.
