EIU starts Illinois' first autism transitional program
CHARLESTON - A transitional program designed to help incoming college students with autism spectrum disorders has kicked off at Eastern Illinois University.
Called the "Students with Autism Transitional Education Program," or STEP, is the only one of its kind in Illinois.
STEP is designed to minimize challenges faced by the students when they leave home for the first time.
"These are very bright individuals, yet they need structure and social skills," said Gail Richard, Director of EIU's Autism Center.
The program, in part, breaks down social barriers and gives students an opportunity to succeed. Each student is assigned a mentor who is a senior or graduate student in EIU's communication disorders and sciences program. The program costs $1000 per semester.
