School spirit strong as Illini come off overwhelming win

CHAMPAIGN--School spirit is still very much alive across the University of Illinois campus two days after what fans are calling a great way to kick off the football season.

The first Illini game did not start on time thanks to a rain delay, but the team finished strong, beating Kent State by almost 50 points Saturday afternoon.

It was a big win for a brand new head coach, just a week after it was announced that Bill Cubit would be promoted to the position.

"I thought it was uplifting, there seems to be a new ground swell of support," said lifelong Illini fan, Phil Katsinas. "People seem excited about the change."

"I think they hired a good couch," said U of I freshman, Olivia Gronenthal. "And that they will do the best they can."

Fans hope the Illini raise their winning record to 2-0 this weekend when they take on Western Illinois University at Memorial Stadium Saturday morning.
