UPDATED: 1 dead in 2 vehicle crash on I-72

UPDATE – Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards reports she has identified a driver who died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 72 Tuesday morning.

Edwards identified the driver of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as 69-year-old Mary Oldfield of Tacoma, Washington. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9.

The Illinois State Police continue to investigate this crash. We will provide more details as they become available.

SANGAMON COUNTY - Illinois State Police say one person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 72 Tuesday morning.

Police say the crash happened at about 10:26 a.m. on I-72 westbound near mile post 93.  According to the preliminary investigation, authorities say a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu was merging into traffic from Veterans Parkway when it turned sharply into the path of a 2015 International truck tractor, resulting in the tractor striking the Malibu on the driver's door.  The westbound lanes of traffic were closed for about an hour after the crash.

ISP officials say the driver of the Malibu was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The driver of the truck tractor was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

This incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police.  We will provide more details as they become available.
