Fido Scurry Returns to Fairview Park

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR – The 15th Annual Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation’s Fido Scurry will take place Saturday, September 12 at Fairview Park from 8 – 11 AM.

This event will feature a 5K or 1 Mile, Run or Walk. Participants are welcome to come even if they do not have a pet to bring. Spectators are also welcome. The Fido Scurry is one of the only sanctioned runs in the state in which a runner may have a pet partner accompanying them on the run.

The Decatur Park District and the Decatur Running Club co-sponsor the event with the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation. The Decatur Running Club then sets up and administers the race.

All proceeds benefit the care and treatment of homeless and stray animals under the care of the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center. Proceeds also help to increase adoptions of shelter animals and develop Fido Fields Dog Parks in Fairview Park and Fido Fields East Dog Park in Nelson Park.

Fido Scurry will consist of a “Yappy Hour” at 8 AM with registration and t-shirt pick up. A pet parade and costume contest follow at 8:40 AM. This year’s theme is: Back to School.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: most original, most feminine, most masculine, costume most fitting the theme, owner and pet costumed most alike and so on.

Costumes are not required but are welcomed and appreciated.

The run and walk events will take place at 9 AM, followed by the “Lap Up” with refreshments, treats and other activities and door prizes. There will also be prizes for overall run winners and medals for runners.

Interested parties can register by picking up forms in advance from any veterinarian's office, the Decatur Indoor Sports Center, Dale's Southlake Pharmacy and Millie & Bo's Dog Barkery. Registration is also available in the park the day of the event.

Registration costs $25 per person for the run, which includes a t-shirt and bandana. The walk will cost $10 per person, or $20 per family. Families will still only receive one bandana.

Those who do not wish to participate but still help can sponsor a student to run by contributing a $25 registration fee. The race committee can find a student runner if the contributing party does not wish to designate one.

Additional t-shirts and bandanas are available for $15 and $5 respectively. Advance t-shirts and bandanas are available at Millie & Bo’s Barkery in the Northgate Pet Plaza, located at 2800 North Martin Luther King Jr Drive in Decatur.
