CHATHAM – A special presentation will be made on a topic few people talk about openly.
Deb Martin, co-founder of Jared’s Keepers Foundation, will speak about teen suicide. Martin devoted her life’s work to bringing awareness to the issue after her only son, Jared, committed suicide last year.
According to the National Mental Health Association (NMHA), the suicide rate among children aged 10-14 increased by 100% between 1980-1996. Suicide is the 6th leading cause of death for 5-15 year olds and is the 3rd leading cause of death for people between 15-24 years old. About a quarter of all high school students have contemplated committing suicide.
The seminar is open to the public and is free. It takes place at 6:30 tonight at Glenwood Middle School in Chatham, Illinois.
