130K Students In Need Of MAP Grants

Decatur – State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, State Senator Andy Manar, (D) Bunker Hill and State Representative Sue Scherer, (D) Decatur, are calling on Governor Rauner to approve tuition assistance for 130,000 students attending Illinois colleges and universities.

The three were at Millikin University in Decatur Thursday along with University President Patrick White to discuss the states Monetary Award Program, more commonly known as MAP grants.  In June Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed the state budget including $397 million for MAP grants to benefit Illinois residents in financial need.

Earlier this month the Illinois Senate approved $373 million in grant funding, the same level of funding initially proposed by the Governor.  The Illinois House is expected to take action on the measure later this month.
