SPRINGFIELD – A special election to determine who replaces former U.S. Representative Aaron Schock takes place tonight in the 18th District.

Republican state Senator Darin LaHood and Democrat Rob Mellon, who is a high school teacher, are the candidates for the vacant seat.

Mellon has made middle class issues and campaign fundraising campaign cornerstones while LaHood has out-raised Mellon $1.2 million to about $10,700. LaHood is the son of former long-time congressman and cabinet member Ray LaHood.

State election officials are expecting voter turnout to be light. Only 11 percent voted in July’s special primary.

Schock resigned in March amid a spending scandal. The 18th Congressional District covers central and western Illinois, including Jacksonville, Peoria, Quincy, and Springfield.
