Ford County Health Department distributing free radon test kits

Posted: Updated:

PAXTON - Ford County Public Health Department officials say they are offering free radon test kits to residents who wish to check their home for the radioactive gas.

The free tests can be picked up at 235 North Taft Street in Paxton.  Officials say exposure to radon can cause health problems, and is the number one cause of lung cancer in individuals who don't smoke.

According to Health Department spokesperson Christy Wallace, radon can find its way into your home through sump pumps, small cracks in the home's foundation, or from soil in crawlspaces.  The gas is also colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making the test kits one of the best ways to check for the presence of radon.

Officials say citizens who have levels of radon greater that 4.0 pCi/L, or the normal level in the air outdoors, will be given instructions on how to get rid of the gas.  For more information, visit http://www.dph.illinois.gov/.
