Poverty Rates Drop in 34 States, Including Illinois
ILLINOIS - The poverty rate dropped across the nation, including Illinois.
According to the U.S. Census, the poverty rate in Illinois dropped from 14.7% in 2013 to 14.4% in 2014. Illinois ranks 27th nationwide; its ranking did not change year to year.
Some noteworthy stories emerged from the report. New Mexico almost surpassed Mississippi last year. New Mexico boasts a population of 2.1 million people and has a poverty rate of 21.3%. 21.5% of Mississippi's nearly 3 million people lived in poverty last year. Both states, however, had some positive news. They were among the 34 states that reported a drop in overall poverty rate. Nationwide, the poverty rate was 14.8%, meaning 46.7 million people lived in poverty.
