Champaign-Urbana Participating in “Lights On Afterschool Day”

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, Urbana Mayor Laurel Lunt Prussing and citizens of both cities are joining with over 7,500 communities around the nation to celebrate the importance of afterschool programs on October 22.

October 22 will now be known as “Lights On Afterschool Day” in the cities of Champaign and Urbana.

This gathering is part of a nationwide movement to highlight three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to the community: keeping youth safe and healthy, inspiring youth to learn and relieving working parents of worries about their children’s activities during afternoon hours.

Studies show 15 million children in the United States have no safe, supervised place to go when the school day ends.

4-H of Champaign County will be hosting a “Lights On Afterschool” open house on October 22 from 4 – 7 PM at their EC3 location at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign.

Urbana City Mayor Laurel Lunt Prussing will be reading the “Lights On Afterschool Day” proclamation at 5 PM.

Those in attendance can participate in a gallery walk featuring ten 4-H groups, hands-on STEM experiments and demonstrations from the Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab. These demonstrations will include a 3-D printer and an embroidery machine.
