Decision delayed on potential plant closure in Clinton

SPRINGFIELD – A decision on the potential closure of a nuclear plant in Clinton will not take place for at least one year.

Exelon owns Illinois' 11 nuclear reactors. The company previously delayed similar decisions for a year about nuclear plants in the Quad Cities and Byron.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association (IRMA) says the move is a step in the right direction.

“IRMA believes all parties should continue the conversation on dealing with a comprehensive energy policy,” said Rob Karr, President/CEO of IRMA. “The possible loss of the Clinton nuclear facility would have seriously jeopardized reliability and impacted costs for retailers.”

Company officials say the deferral will give policymakers in Illinois time to consider legislation that Exelon says would "level the playing field" for carbon-free electricity.

Opponents have said Exelon doesn't need a bailout.
